Students will become fluent in American Sign Language prior to applying for professional admission and taking coursework in General Deaf Studies or Educational Interpreting. The Deaf Studies program at University of Arizona has a heavy emphasis on community engagement, service learning, and reciprocity within the Deaf Community. Students are required to have a Deaf mentor during their last two years in the program.
Students are also required to complete at least one service learning project within the Deaf community during the last two years of the program. The Educational Interpreting sub-plan has a heavy emphasis on working within K -12 school environments.
Students are required to complete at least 3 practicum courses within K -12 schools with 90 hours for each practicum. Students are also paired with a Deaf language mentor as well as an interpreting mentor throughout their final two years of the program.
